1. John Derrickson was born around 1790 Gloucester Co.
N.J. He married Mary Packer in 1811. John served in the War of 1812.
They moved to Sheblyville, IN in 1820's. They lived in Ohio
for a while before moving to Ind. Mary died in 1849 (typhoid).
John died around 1869. He married Rachel Brinson after his first
wife died. Rachel died and he married Emily Ray, she outlived him.
John's children were:
2 John Jr. (moved to Iowa)
2 Albert (moved to Iowa)
2 James (possibly moved to Wis.)
2 Thomas Packer (moved to Richland Center Wis.)
2 Andrew (moved to Iowa)
2 William (Stayed in Shelbyville, Ind.-our great grandfather).
2 Dayton (died in 1849-typhoid).
2 Thomas Packer was born October 15 1821 in Ohio. He married
Rachel Chew May 7, 1840. He served in the Mexican War. In 1848
he moved to Richland Center, Wis. It took 3 months by ox cart.
The house that he originally built is still standing. He owned around
900 acres near Richland Center. He died Dec. 9, 1909 and is buried
on the original farm. We talked to people living in that area and
they all had stories to tell about him. I got most of my information
about the Derrickson's from his grandson Claude who lives in Indianapolis.
Thomas Packer's Children:
3 Christopher Columbus (My dad remembered meeting him)
3 James (died in infancy)
3 Hester (died in infancy)
3 Milton (died at 18 years of age)
3 Elizabeth (Hamilton)
3 Harriet (Dow)
Most of these Derrickson's are buried in a cemetary near Richland
Center. At one time it was called the Derrickson Reservation as
Thomas Packer donated the land. Eventually the name was changed
and it made Thomas Packer mad so he refused to be buried there.
He is buried on the farm. His grave has a tall iron fence around
it. My husband and I visited the old farm and the cemetary. The
country is beautiful around that area. That branch of Derrickson's
were musically inclined and many of them were teachers.
