To the Paternal DOSWELL side of my genealogy website.

Alternate Doswell spellings (that I have encountered):
Dozwell
Dowdeswell
Dowdell
Name Origin:

The Doswell name is English. It orginated, I believe in Gloucestershire. There is a town there called Dowdeswell. It is a very small farming community just south of the city of Gloucester.

Family Origin (UK):

The oldest verifiable Doswell individual I have investigated is Ambrose DOSWELL (DOZWELL) born 19 February 1795 in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, UK. His baptismal record (18 March 1795) lists his father as John DOZWELL and his mother as Susannah.

I suspect that John DOZWELL was a gardner at one of the estates in the area. The next time I found Ambrose DOZWELL, was the listing of his daughter Marianna's christening (30 May 1824) at the Parish at Saint Paul's Walden Bury in Hertforshire, UK. Ambrose's wife is listed as Catharine and he is gardner on the estate. His abode is listed as the Bury Garden House. St. Paul's Walden Bury is most famous as the childhood estate of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (recently deceased). St. Paul's Walden is where King George VI Duke of York proposed marriage to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

The next time there is record of Ambrose it's for the christenings of his two sons at the Parish of St. Leonard's church in Shoreditch, London, UK. Ambrose DOSWELL was listed as a nurseryman in Hoxton square (which is just SW of the church). Both boys were baptised on 10 February 1828. Thomas David DOSWELL's birth was listed as 7 December 1825 and John Hawkings DOSWELL as 3 November 1827. John Hawkings DOSWELL is my relative. Although I originally thought Thomas died (as I was unable to distinctly re-connect him to the family), I recently was contacted by a relative of Thomas who is still living in London. His genealogy has been added to the site with this update.

John married Catharine Jane HUMPHRIES on 29 July 1852 in Boddington, Gloucestershire, UK. By September the couple (along with several of Catharine's sisters and sisters-in law) migrated to Cincinnati, WI where John was put in charge of the William Resor Greenhouse. John and Catharine's first child was Haidee Elizabeth (supposedly named after the ship they crossed the Atlantic in) born in 1853. My relative George Walter Sr. was born 22 September 1854 in Font du Lac County, WI. In 1859 John DOSWELL was appointed the superintendent and supervising landscape artist for Lindewood cemetery in Fort Wayne, IN.

Family Origin (IN):

My relative George Walter DOSWELL Sr. started a florist business in Fort Wayne, IN called DOSWELL flowers. He married his second wife Mary Elizabeth WEBB in 1882. Their fourth child George Walter DOSWELL Jr. was my great-grandfather. He was born 12 May 1889 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. My great-grandfather inherited the florist business along with several of his brothers. He married Mary Amelia BURTON on 11 March 1922 at Trinity Episcopal Church. My grandmother was born 23 March 1923 in Fort Wayne, IN. My grandmother's family has a long history in the Fort Wayne area and the florist business is still in business today. My branch of the DOSWELL name ended with my grandmother and her sister Eleanor. My story picks up on the Derrickson genealogy page when my grandmother married my grandfather Charles Derrickson Jr.

Conclusions:

The DOSWELL name has migrated across the Atlantic with the tide of history. I am proud to be the repository of family history for this generation and welcome any input visitors may have about my recollection of this branch of DOSWELL history.
