NOTES ON DOSWELL FAMILY HISTORY by Virginia Jane Johnson (Fairburn)
My mother was Haidee Louise Fairburn (Adams), sixth child of Caroline Jane Doswell

May 1, 1980

DOSWELL This is an English family from London. "John Hawkins Doswell" was the son of Ambrose and Katherine Doswell; probably of an aristocratic family as he was the child of a morganatic marriage which seemed to provide the means for ship passage to America; Hannah and Harold "Doc" Doswell told me this but I never asked the source of their information. I wish I had asked about the morganatic marriage title.

A biography of John Hawkins Doswell is in the book "History of the Upper Maumee Valley" volume 2, 1889 page 283 (Robertson G c 977.201 A 1 5 r publisher). In Fort Wayne Public Library. One copy in reference room also in genealogy department. I have seen this book at antique auctions but the price was always more than I could afford. In 1974 a historical reprint was made by Unigraphic Co. of Evansville 1401 N. Fares Ave. 47711. This volume also has an item on the eldest son George Walter Doswell, florist. There is a copy in the historical museum here. Cousin Bon Roebels family had a copy but she doesn't know whatever became of it. Perhaps someone in the family owns one. It would be nice to have.

Might John Hawkins Doswell be a descendant of the explorer John Hawkins?

Caroline Jane Humphries was born in the beautiful "Cotswold Hill" country of England near the Severn River Valley. Perhaps a farm family as her father Charles was a miller by trade. She was born in 1825 in Cheltanham Gloucestershire. 1825 was the reign of King William IV and she was 12 years old when Queen Victoria became ruler. She was six years younger than Victoria. This was also the time of poet Lord Byron. Cheltanham was the scene of the last great battle in 893 of Alfred the Great and the Danes. Gloucester Cathedral is near here.

John Hawkins Doswell Born November 3, 1827 London England. Died 13 October 1900, aged 73 Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA.
Caroline Jane Humphries born April 9, 1825 Gloucester England. Died July 21, 1902 at Almond Wisconsin USA, age 78.

All this is from Doswell family bible in hand writing of John Hawkins Doswell

In September 1852 the Doswells entered the United states aboard the French ship "Haidee". The passenger list is as follows:
John Doswell male age 25 gardner-England
Caroline Doswell female age 27 England
Hannah Humphries age 22 England
John Humphries a male infant(?)
District of New York, port of New York. These passengers destination listed as WI. This ship list information is from microfilm roll/#1354 119 Genealogy department in Ft. Wayne, IN public library. The Doswells first born child was named "Haidee" perhaps for the ships name. This is also the name of the enchanting Greek girl in Byrons poem Don Juan (3rd Canto) Also my mother's name.

Caroline Humphries had five sisters: Rose, Hannah, Emma, Charlotte, and Ann. (Hannah Elizabeth Hanson) Lived in the Lindenwood Cemetery house with Harry and Maymie until death.

Some Doswell relatives remained in WI. Perhaps from the Humphries side of the family. There is a small city Doswell, VA USA zip code 23047. Could have some family connection. The John Hawkins Doswells did not farm long in WI before coming to Lindenwood. Spent their first winter in Cincinnati, OH. Then to WI and returned to Cincinnati in 1859 then to Fort Wayne. (Doswell WI farm between Almond and Wasaco). See roll 311 microfilm of 1860 census pg. 32 Lanark Portage County, WI in Post Office Badger. It lists as follows:
John Humphries age 47
Jenney Humphries age 66
Charles Doswell age 8 born in England
Family of Jerome Adams and Hugo Adams may be related to Doswells. They were Doswell cousins in WI.
