Singapore: During my first visit to Singapore I asked my friend Dennis to take me to lunch
at a "local" establishement because I wanted to sample the "local" food. He looked at me funny
and said sure no problem. Next thing I knew we were in the lower basement of a large hotel
mingling amongst a potpurri of local peoples. The workers in Singapore are mainly Chinese, Malay,
and Phillipine immigrants. I began to have second thoughts when I saw the barbequed Chinese ducks
with heads still on and the eyes staring at me. I decided to go vegetarian. Every time I go to the
East nowadays I stick to vegetarian!!! More Singapore
Japan: Japan is a strange and foreign place. The people are extremely nice and the
cities all feel incredibly safe. I had been through Japan several times on my way to Diego Garcia.
The first time I went I found out that our hotel had a shuttle bus into the town of Narita which
is near the airport. My friend Dennis and I ventured into town and found a neat temple and a quaint
smallish town. I vowed that I would try a vacation through Japan on one of my next trips. Well
two trips later I made that dream come true. To prepare myself I read the book Shogun which wets your
appetite about the things you will see in Japan. Most of those things were destroyed during WWII;
however, there are many reproductions and the museums were excellent. I spent about ten days
exploring Japan. I was able to hostel my way from Narita to Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto.
I loved all of these places. More Japan
Malaysia: During our work trips to Diego Garcia, we are often stranded in Singapore from
a few days to nearly a week. Singapore only holds a certain amount of attractions (for me
anyway) and I wanted to get out of the city. I decided to take a day trip to Malaysia. From
our hotel there was a trip to a city up the coast called Mallaca. More Malaysia
Diego Garcia: Diego is an atoll in the Indian Ocean. It is a British Indian
Ocean Territory and the Brits run the island (all three of them). The islands original
inhabitants were French Polynesians who had plantations. The reminants of the plantation
days are a few dozen donkeys and loads of chickens. They all free range over the atoll nowadays. More Diego Garcia |
