HAYMAN FIRE RECOVERY
ALEX HAASE
EAGLE PROJECT

THIS IS THE SUPPORT THAT IS NEEDED
  1. PEOPLE (VOLUNTEERS)
    • TRAFFIC MANAGERS to keep car trafic along Forest Rd 211 safe for the cars and for the volunteers working to clear undergrowth.

    • COMMMUNICATORS (preferably HAM radio operators) so that  the volunteers on site can be effectively managed and, if necessary, to obtain emergency assistance.

    • EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN  for each work day who can provide treatment on site as necessary or call for assistance

    • GROUP LEADERS who are willing to put in some extra time to learn how to identify the seedlings and then clear the undergrowth from around them.  They will be key to a successful project as the seedlings are hard to find.  The leaders will help train and work with each group of volunteers (there will be several groups working each day) to clear a space around the seedlings and not rake up the seedlings.
  2. MATERIAL SUPPORT
    • Food donations for each work day.  That would be a sandwich lunch for each of up to 70 volunteers on each work day.

    • Garden hoes (tomato hoes) (not hoses) so the volunteers will have an appropriate tool for clearing the undergrowth

    • Porta-johns will be needed.  Two each work day would be a good number.  Recall that this is a burn area - there are no trees to hide behind and the nearest lavatory is some distance away.

    • Bamboo stakes roughly 3 feet long each for marking the unmarked seedlings ( some are already marked - others are incognito)
      .
    • Carpooling-imagine 70 individual volunteers each driving their own vehicle out to the work site!  Where are we gonna park all those cars?  If we can get 2 - 4 people in each car we can reduce the number of vehicles from a max of 70 to between 18 and 35.  Another issue is the the condition of the road.  With the runoff from the summer rains that we have had the roads are not in particularly good condition. While not four wheel drive roads, they do require a certain amount of ground clearance.
