FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRANKFORT, KY --(August 19, 1996)-- Crossing state boundaries may no longer be a viable option for lawbreakers in Kentucky. The Transportation Cabinet has joined the Driver License Compact and, after August 21st, will be better equipped to overcome jurisdictional limitations regarding driver license records.

The Compact allows for the exchange of information with 46 states through the National Driver Register (NDR). The driver's complete record is on file in his\her home state, and is made available to other states, with information regarding previous driver licenses held, serious convictions, accidents, and suspensions or revocations. The process should prevent drivers from obtaining more than one license or obtaining a license illegally.

Secretary of Transportation Fred N. Mudge says joining the compact has been a goal of the Cabinet for several years. "This is an opportunity for us to use available technology and build a working partnership with other states. The Compact will help ensure the safety of Kentucky travelers by preventing multiple licensing and by removing those drivers from our highways who attempt to circumvent the law."

The goals of the Compact are to establish one driver license and record for each individual and to ensure uniform and predictable treatment of serious traffic offenders. It also allows Kentucky courts to confiscate the license of non-residents convicted of serious offenses.
