Indiana Point System
The point system in Indiana is as follows :
- Points are active on record for 2 years
- 12 points accumulated in 2 years result in probation
- Any tickets during probation period results in license suspension
- Out-of-State tickets will be assessed points if Indiana has an
equivalent violation in the books
- Tickets are reported to non-resident's drivers home state under the
Drivers License Compact.
- AH = Automatic Hearing, MS = Mandatory Suspension
Point Scale :
Speeding
1-15 mph over or speed not indicated - 2 points
16-25 mph over - 4 points
25+ mph over - 6 points, can be considered reckless driving
8 Point Violations
Most of these violations require a MS and AH
DUI, OWI, DWI
Speed Contest (Drag Racing)
Reckless Driving involving injury or property damage
driving commercial vehicle without CDL
Commercial vehicle failing to stop at RR crossing
Operating commercial vehcle while disqualified
Operating commercial vehcle with more than .04 BAC
misuse of license, use of false information, unauthenic license
Leaving the scene of an accident (personal injury, death, property damage)
OPerating vehicle with suspended registration
Violating restricted license
Obstruction of traffic causing injury or death
Criminal mischief with vehicle
Criminal recklessness with vehicle
6 Point Violations
Running stop sign or failing to yield
Disobeying RR signals
Following too closely
Disregarding police officer while directing traffic
Fail to excercise due care when dealing with pedestrians
Passing a school bus while loading/unloading
Improper motorcycle endorsement
4 Point Violations
Disregarding traffic signal
Under 18 year old riding motorcycle without helmet
Under 21 year old transporting, consuming, possesing
alcohol in a motor vehicle + MS
Equipment violation regarding brakes
Child restraint violations
unsafe speed on bridge or elevated structure
Improper passing
Driving left of center
Wrong Way on one-way street
Driving left of rotary island
Lane restriction by trucks
Improper turn
Violation lane restriction by truck
Illegal U-turn
Unsafe start
motorcycle passenger violation
both hands not on handle bars of motorcycle
Depreiving motor vehicle of full lane usage
Operating 3 more motocycles abreast in a single lane
Driver education permit violation + AH
Temporary motorcycle learner permit violation + AH
Violation of DL restriction or mechanical device

Driving without ever having a valid license
Permitting unlicensed person to operate motor vehicle
Permitting unlawful use of motor vehicle
Interlock device violation
Violation of probationary license + MS
Violation of open container law
2 Point Violations
Illegal parking on the interstate
bumper height violation
muffler violation
no emergency equipment in commercial vehicle
improper lights, reflectors or warning signals
motorcycle equipment violations
Failing to signal
No flashing amber or red light on slow moving vehicle
Operating motorcycle without headlight
