South Carolina Point System
The point system in South Carolina is as follows :
- Violations that occured less than 12 months ago are counted at full value
- Violations that occured between more then 12 months to 24 months ago
are counted at half value
- Out-of-State tickets will be assessed points if South Carolina has an
equivalent violation in the books
- Tickets are reported to non-resident's drivers home state under the
Drivers License Compact.
- Point system applies to non-resident driving privilege
Suspension based on Points
- 12 to 15 points - 3 month suspension
- 16 or 17 points - 4 month suspension
- 18 or 19 points - 5 month suspension
- 20 points and up - 6 month suspension
Point Scale :
Speeding
1-10 mph over - 2 points
11-24 mph over - 4 points
25-up mph over - 6 points, can be considered reckless driving
6 point violations
Reckless Driving
Passing Stopped School Bus
Hit & Run, Property Damages Only
4 point violations
Disobedience to any traffic control device
Failing to Yield Right of Way
Driving on Wrong Side of Road
Passing unlawfully
Turning unlawfully
Driving through/within safety zone
Failing to give signal or giving improper signal
for stopping, turning, or suddenly decreased speed
Following too closely
2 point violations
Shifting lanes without safety precaution
Improper dangerous parking
Failing to dim lights
Operating with improper lights
Operating with improper brakes
Operating a vehicle in unsafe condition
Driving in improper lane
Improper backing
