Il Duomo (an 18 kB jpeg file).
In Florence, one of the dominant features of the skyline is
'Il Duomo.' This church took well over 100 years to build. The
building is entirely covered with gorgeous red, white and green
marble, and incredible amounts of art work (statuary and stone
friezes). Sadly, due to pollution damage, most of the original
art work has been moved to a museum and replaced by replicas.
Switzerland
Work occasionally takes me to Geneva for two weeks of
meetings. One of the most sought after sights is a glimpse of
Mont Blanc through a break in the clouds or the thinning haze. In
the weeks that I have been there, this is the clearest that the
mountain has been visible.
On the middle weekend of the two week meetings, it is
sometimes possible to get out of Geneva to do some sightseeing.
One of the easiest trips is to take a train along the lake to
Montreux. One of Montreux' attractions is Chateau Chillon, where
Lord Byron was held prisoner. It is surrounded by spectacular
mountains.
