This depicts what's left of Engine 6, after a
runaway on the 3% grade above Turquoise Lake, below Busk. Renowned CM author Mel McFarland
pointed out that other photos of this wreck
can be found on page 212, in Morris Cafky's 1965 masterpiece book,
"Colorado Midland". Interestingly, one of those photos
shows the locomotive on its left side. Presumably, this was taken
after it was righted and before it was dragged back to the rails the following
spring. To accomplish that task, Midland crews built a ramp from
the wreck site back to the tracks. Although difficult to see,
could it be that part of that structure can be seen in front of the
engine? A visit to the site revealed what appeared to a steeply
inclined roadbed leading up the hillside to the right of where the
photographer was standing.
Former Midland Engineer Claude Harris later recalled that three trainmen were killed
in this January 1, 1910 incident; Fireman Marshal Rich, along with the
conductor and rear brakeman. Photograph from
General Car Foreman White's mementos.
