There would also be a Short Range Transport Vehicle to transport the crew to the orbiting station. This craft works in the orbit of Mars and is also fueled to leave Mars from an orbit. The SRTV (much like the X-33 in its function except that the SRTV transports humans) will shuttle crew members to the space station for departure from Mars.
As our team worked, we learned that we could use an inflatable dome to live in, use a waterfall with a small pool at the bottom for swimming, drinking water (specially filtered), enjoyment, and watering the greenhouse. We also learned that we needed exercise equipment, so we created a centrifuge that we would run in, and a rowing machine with a video projection that makes it seem like we are moving down a river. An anti-gravity room also provides entertainment.
The Mars Millennium Design Challenge kept us busy, constantly thinking and re-thinking ideas and plans. It would be fun and interesting to have a chance to try out some of these ideas on a real Martian colony!
