Almost on a whim, after a lifetime in Wichita,
Kansas, we decided as a family to move to Colorado Springs, Colorado 15
years ago. It was a glorious time of making new friends,
exploring new vistas, and living a new life of our own creation.
As Vicki has often said, "It's like being on
vacation but with no money."

Although Ron and Vicki attended
high school together, graduating only a year apart,
Ron,Vicki, Misty, and Kelley first met at a church
Christmas party in December of 1975. Ron and
Vicki's first date was the following New Year's Eve. A
year and 3 months later, on March 19, 1977, four were joined
together as a family at Zion United Methodist Church in Wichita
by Rev. Clarence Haber. In July of 1978 our family was
blessed with Aspen's beautiful spirit.
Ron was born and raised in Wichita and
graduated from Wichita High School East in 1964. Interests
include his family, the Society For
Creative Anacronism which is a Medieval period re-creation
group, photography, camping on Rampart Range Road and (according
to Vicki) too much time on the internet.
Vicki was born in Pineville, Missouri and
moved to Wichita Kansas at age 4, graduating from Wichita High
School East in 1965. Interests include being a mom and a grandmom, the Society
For Creative Anacronism, sewing, period costume making for fun
and profit, reading, camping with the SCA and her family,
sleeping late on Saturday morning and bubble baths.
Misty was born in Wichita
and attended Wichita public schools before moving with the
family to Colorado Springs. She attended Manitou Springs High
School and has a challanging position with a local commercial
communications company. It is obvious from her picture that she,
too, is interested in things medieval. Her other interests are
her daughter, good friends, quiet times, her new puppy and
waiting for Mr. Right. (No, she is not looking for Mr. Right.
If he IS Mr. Right, he is looking for her!)
Kelley was also born in Wichita and, like Misty,
attended public schools there before moving to Colorado Srpings
and attending Palmer High School. Kelley is a bartender at a
lovely neighborhood bar, the Yukon Tavern. Stop and have a beer
with her and leave a big tip! Her interests are in physical
fitness, her friends, and enjoying what time she has away from
her profession to the fullest. Update
Kelley has left her bartender/waitress profession for a new profession,
wife and mother. In September 2001, Kelley married a fine young man,
Kevin, and they began their life together. In welcoming a new son-in-law,
we welcomed a new granddaugher into our family as well, Kevin's then 14
year old daughter, Amber. She is bright, beautiful, loving young lady
and just fits our family perfectly. In August of 2004, little Miss
Jordan arrived at Memorial Hospital and is or
second granddaughter born in Colorado Springs. Kevin and Kelley are
constantly blessed with her smile and love, as are we all.
Aspen was born in Wichita and began
public school in Colorado Springs. At about age 7, Aspen
was diagnosed autistic .
She was involved for many years in a very innovative educational
program designed specifically for autistic children, and it is
to the credit of Dr. Marcia Braden, Dr. Robert Tinker,
her many caring teachers, aids, and support personnel that
today she is a very bright, loving, young adult with a future
ahead of her who brings joy to all who know her. It is
unfortunate that the administration of Colorado School District
11, and especially the director of Special Education, Ron
Hage, have seen fit to cut this creative program, along with
other important services that teach the disabled to become
functioning and educated adults. Aspen's interests
include her computer, the outdoors, going shopping at Safeway
(thanks to Mgr. Don Shaver, Erin, Adam, Pam, and all the
great employees at the Circle and Galley store for their
kindness and compassion), and going to the fitness center with
Vicki and Kelley.
Jasmin,
Misty's 9 year old daughter, is the only family member born in
Colorado Springs. She attends Helen Hunt Elementary School and
actually loves school. She delights in "tricking"
Aspen into doing her math homework and taking walks
(sometimes she even asks permission first). Her interests are as
varied as any 9 year old girl and change daily.

No description of our family could be
complete without remembering our four legged member,
Coolie. Now almost 8 years old, he came to us young, and
grew with us. He is most definately Aspen's dog and is a
true watchdog for her. From almost day one, he realized that
Aspen needed special care and he has always been there to
provide it. He keeps her "hearded" towards the tent
when we go camping and is the perfect alarm when she is
somewhere she shouldn't be doing something she shouldn't be
doing. Coolie's interests include, Aspen and his
family, running the neighborhood when he can slip out of the
yard, and camping with the rest of us. We always feel safe
knowing he is sleeping just outside the door of our tent. He is
Aspen's Guardian Angel and our good friend.
UPDATE
Watching our best friend age before our eyes was heart rending and in
September of 2002, we responded to a newspaper ad to find a beautiful 3
month old puppy, a black lab/border collie mix. (Both dogs were fullblooded
in their breed and the puppies were the result of a midnight tryst of neighbor
dogs.) Our new puppy, picked from the litter, had all the physical attributes
of the black lab except for a white sploch on his chest and white on the toes
of his 2 back feet. During the twenty mile drive home with him sleeping in
Vicki's arms, we named him Chaucer (yes, for the famous 14th century author of
"The Canterbury Tales". The stately name seemed to fit him and it does today
as well.) We wanted have a new friend, not replace an old, and wanted to let
him learn at the master's paws, Coolie. They became fast friends.
In August of 2003, a 16 year old Jasmin came to visit from her home in California
and was distressed to see Coolie so frail and in constant pain. All of us knew
his time was short and that he was in constant pain. Jasmin couldn't leave for
home with a last memory of the dog that she couldn't remember not being in her
life in such pain, so on her last day in Colorado Springs and after 14
years of a happy healthy life with us, Coolie painfully hobbled into the backseat
of the family car for one last ride. His work over, it was time that he go on.
Coolie always hated the vet and I could not in good conscience let him spend
his last moments there, so I called the good people at Hamlett Spay and Neuter
and they agreed to come to the car. The kind vet spent our last moments with
Coolie as he lay in the backseat and slowly and painlessly left us. Misty,
Jasmin, and Ron spent the afternoon preparing a grave for our friend in the
back yard under a nice shady pine tree in the yard he loved, still looking on
and after us. Our new friend, Chaucer, will never replace Coolie but is a great dog with
an intellingence inherited from the best of both his breeds and has become a
loving and loved member of our family. He's a born comic, and full of love.
Open the fridge, rattle the plastic on a food wrapper, or silently open the
can of peanuts and he's sitting 'pretty' ready for his handout. He's a great
friend.

In October, Ron, Vicki, and Aspen went
once again as every year up Rampart Range Road to see the ever
beautiful fall changing of the aspen trees.
The simple yet overwhelming beauty of fall in Colorado always
gives us pause to reflect on our lives here and how lucky we
are to be just where we want to be.
That is basically us in a nutshell.

The Currier and Ives reproductions are assumed to be in the public domain. If you have information otherwise, please leave me e-mail and they will be removed. I consider the prints of Currier and Ives an important part of Americana to be enjoyed by all and am happy to present 3 pieces of their great works here.
