Mile High Browns Backers History ~ The Mile High Browns Backers were established in 1999 when the Browns returned to the league after a 3 year hiatus following the team's relocation to Baltimore. Formerly the Colorado Browns Backers, the club has existed in Denver since the late 1970's. Although in the heart of Broncos territory in Denver there has always been a small but loyal contingent of Browns fans that watch the games on satellite every Sunday during the NFL season. Although some of our members call Denver their permanent home many members are transient. Moving to Denver for a few years and then returning to Ohio or other places. But during their time in Denver they know they can always count on a place to watch the Browns every Sunday. In the early 1990's our viewing location changed frequently but we've been watching the Browns on satellite at the Retreat Lounge since 1993. Prior to moving to the Retreat every sports bar we would adopt as our new home would go out of business or wouldn't make a commitment to show the Browns every Sunday. In 1991, wen Excaliburs III on Colorado Blvd went out of business the club watched a few games at Jackson's Hole on Leetsdale, and at Bruno's Saloon on East Colfax, and then The Mirage on Arapahoe Road in Aurora. But one Sunday morning in 1993 our loyal dawg contingent showed up at The Mirage to watch the Browns only to discover that the bar was closed. As we waited in the parking lot it became apparent the staff wasn't going to show up that morning. Someone suggested we caravan over to the Retreat Lounge and watch the game there. The owner of the Retreat is a Cleveland native and was happy to have the Browns Backers. And we've been watching the games at the Retreat Lounge ever since. |
