This is one of the few photos known to exist of Engine 102, primarily used in switching service. The names of the trainmen and the location of the shot are unknown. Notice the brakeman's club in the hand of the man standing at the center of the photo. Such tools were necessary when securing the car's brake wheels- they also were handy when dealing with hobos and trespassers. (From Ralph Ellison's collection.) |
