Preface to Word Processed Edition

The following adjustments have been made.

The numbering of the prefatory pages has been changed from Roman numerals to Arabic preceded by the letter "R".

The text of the Homilies in the 1859 edition contained line numbering in the outside margins at every fifth line.  In some cases that editor made reference to portions of the text by line number.  In this word processed edition, the numbering of lines has not been retained due to automatic line wrapping.  Lines containing text referenced by the former line numbers is now *between asterisks* on the pages referred to.

Margin notes have been mostly converted to footnotes preceding the lettered footnotes and beginning with the words "Margin Notes:" unless they are sufficiently short, ungrouped Bible citations, which have been inserted within the text at the reference point within [square brackets], and with "Ibid." replaced by a repetition of the name of the book cited.

Footnotes that previously were continued from one page to another are now kept whole on the starting page.

In the interest of space and readability, all Bible chapter citations have been converted from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals followed by a colon.  This is also true of selected other citations when a Roman numeral, e.g., for a volume number, was quite long.

At points where one or more characters in the text copy used as the source for this project were unreadable, they are represented by an equal number of _ underlines.
