Mars

4th planet from the Sun, the seventh largest planet in the solar system

Average distance from the Sun     227,940,000 km / 1.52 AU
Diameter     6,794 km
Mass     6.4219e23 kg
Orbital period around the Sun     1.88 Earth years (687 Earth days)
Number of moons     2, Deimos and Phobos

Known as the Red Planet, Mars has a very thin atmosphere containing mostly carbon dioxide, with nitrogen, argon, and trace amounts of oxygen and water vapor. There is evidence that liquid water flowed on the surface long ago. Now all the water left on the planet is frozen in the polar ice caps or beneath the surface. Mars has two very small moons which are very close to the surface of the planet.

Our Solar System

Our solar system is located on the edge of a spiral arm called Orion’s Arm, and is one-half to two-thirds of the way (28,000 light-years) from the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
